The European Health Data Space. Campaign roll-out for healthcare professionals

We are pleased to share updates on the European Health Data Space (EHDS), a major EU initiative aimed at improving the flow of health data within and across Member States. The EHDS enables healthcare professionals to securely access and share patient data across the EU, supporting better-informed clinical decisions, faster care, and improved patient safety. 

Key Benefits for Healthcare Professionals: 

·        Reliable access to patients’ data. Electronic record systems (EHRs) will be standardised across Member States, enabling seamless data exchange. It means better data interoperability of the IT system you already use. 

·        Better cross-border care. You will be able to securely access Patient Summary with information on allergies, current medication, previous illness, surgeries (later extended by medical images, lab results, and hospital discharge reports) from patients across the EU via MyHealth@EU infrastructure. With cross-border ePrescriptions, your patients will be able to obtain their medication in a pharmacy located in another EU country. 

·        Higher efficiency. Timely access to data reduces test duplication, eliminates fragmented records, and saves time because health data is accessible through the national electronic medical record. 

·        Improved patient safety. You have access to the data you need for diagnosing patients, planning therapies, and in emergency situations. 

·        Enhanced collaboration and innovation. With secure information sharing, many bottlenecks in healthcare systems will be removed. Clinical research gets easier, so you can offer patients access to advanced treatments.

Timeline: 

The EHDS will be rolled out in stages:  

• By 2029, Patient Summaries, ePrescriptions, and eDispensations will be available across all EU Member States (currently under development)  
• By 2031, the scope will expand to include Laboratory results and reports, medical imaging studies and reports, and hospital discharge reports, further enhancing its value for patients and professionals alike.
