Event Description
Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS) can be very debilitating. Fortunately, there are many adjustments to lifestyle that can lead to an improvement in symptoms. Management for PoTS falls into two different categories including
· Non-pharmacological (without medicines)
· Pharmacological (using medicines)
Management needs to be individualised, with non-pharmacological therapies being the foundation of any PoTS treatments with input from an interdisciplinary team often needed including dietetics, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and psychology. This course will provide an opportunity to bring HSCP’s together to equip healthcare providers with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively manage patients with PoTS.
Learning Outcomes
· Understand the Pathophysiology of PoTS:
Participants will be able to explain the underlying mechanisms of PoTS, including its impact on the autonomic nervous system, cardiovascular system, and blood pressure regulation.
· Identify Symptoms and Diagnostic Criteria:
Participants will be able to recognize the key symptoms of PoTS, such as orthostatic intolerance, tachycardia, fatigue, and dizziness, and apply the appropriate diagnostic criteria to identify the condition.
· Distinguish Between PoTS and Other Conditions:
Participants will be able to differentiate PoTS from similar autonomic disorders and conditions with overlapping symptoms, such as chronic fatigue syndrome, orthostatic hypotension, and anxiety disorders.
· Develop Effective Treatment Plans:
Participants will be able to create personalized treatment plans for PoTS patients, combining pharmacological interventions, lifestyle adjustments, and non-pharmacological treatments.
· Improve Communication with Patients:
Participants will be able to effectively communicate with patients about their diagnosis, treatment options, and lifestyle changes, providing emotional support and practical advice.
· Monitor and Adjust Treatment Strategies:
Participants will be able to monitor patient responses to treatments, recognize when adjustments are needed, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to optimize care.
· Promote a Multidisciplinary Approach to Care:
Participants will be able to work within interdisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive care for patients with PoTS. Participants will be able to work alongside other healthcare professionals to integrate knowledge of PoTS into general practice, promoting better outcomes and creating a more supportive healthcare environment.
· Enhance Understanding of Current Research and Treatment Advances:
Participants will be able to stay informed about the latest research findings and advances in the treatment of PoTS, applying evidence-based practices in their care of patients.
· Advocate for Patients with PoTS:
Participants will be able to advocate for PoTS patients, raising awareness of the condition and ensuring patients receive appropriate support and accommodations in their care.
