Facilitated by Lisa Jamieson, this 2 day online training introduces the process of occupational formulation and negotiating measurable goals, as outlined by Parkinson & Brooks (2021).

The training is based on the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) and supports therapists to succinctly, yet comprehensively, synthesise assessment information into an occupation-focused narrative that can be shared with the individual. Each formulation builds a compelling rationale for change and facilitates the identification of treatment priorities, which in turn enables the creation of measurable goals. This person-centred and collaborative process is highly recommended by Occupational Therapists who are striving for an effective way to articulate their professional reasoning and ensure that occupation is central to their practice.

Aims

Participants will:

  • understand the concept of occupational formulation and why this is important
  • understand how to construct occupational formulations using the MOHO framework
  • understand how to create measurable goals using a specific goal setting formula
  • practice these skills during the training.

Course times:

Day 1: 19th November, 9.30 - 3.30

Day 2: 26th November, 9.30 - 3.00

This training will be hosted online by the facilitator using MS Teams

Please Note: This training is not necessary to use Occupational Formulation and Measurable Goal Setting in practice. This training is designed to support an understanding of this process which can support implementation in practice.

About the Facilitator

Lisa Jamieson is a registered Occupational Therapist, who trained at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen and qualified in 2004. Lisa has predominantly worked in adult mental health and forensic services and currently works within the NHS within a prison setting. Lisa has a passion for the theory and tools that support occupation-centred practice and believes that a strong professional identity centred on occupation is imperative for services to maximise their impact.

Lisa is aware of the negative service implications of compromised professional identity. This can include poor job satisfaction (Murray et al 2015), low professional visibility (Edwards & Dirette 2010), pressure to provide non-occupation-based practices (Devery et al, 2018) and therapists can move further away from core theories in search of more specialized roles (Turner & Knight 2015). Lisa has therefore developed several training packages which support therapists to use occupation-centred theory, assessments and interventions, to ensure occupation is central to practice, strengthening professional identity.
