NDT/Bobath Advanced Course Handling & Problem Solving

The Sacred Heart Hospital in conjunction with the OT Dept Mayo University Hospital is delighted to be hosting an NDT Advanced course in the Treatment of Adults with Hemiplegia.

Course Description:This five-day course is designed to broaden one’s knowledge base and enhance skills learned in the NDT/Bobath certificate course.  An emphasis will be placed on enhancing participants’ assessment and handling skills. The patient practicum of the course will involve patients with a variety of acquired CNS lesions (stroke, traumatic brain injury, and ataxia if possible). Each participant is encouraged to bring to the course his/her most pressing questions/struggles you would like addressed during the course.  As much as possible, your clinical questions will be addressed.   

Pre-requisites:  Participants must have completed an NDT/Bobath Certificate Course in the Management of Adults with Stroke and Brain Injury or a Certificate Course in the Management and Treatment of Children with Cerebral Palsy and other Neuromotor Disorders as a prerequisite to this course (or equivalent with IBITA or EBTA). 

Course content will include:

  • ICF Enablement Model (from the WHO) for assessment and intervention planning.
  • Current concepts of postural control and movement as it relates to functional use of the trunk, arm and leg in gait and upright functional activities.
  • Analysis of complex movement patterns related to function.
  • Analysis of atypical movement patterns.
  • Problem-solving and intervention principles and strategies.

Course will include lab, lecture and patient demonstrations.  Participants will treat patients at least four of the five days of this course.

 Course Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to:

  • Utilise the ICF Enablement Model for patient evaluation and intervention planning.
  • Identify current concepts of postural control and movement.
  • Identify normal movement components and biomechanics of the UE
  • Analyse factors and identify the most significant impairments which interfere with the performance of functional activities; including those in the UE and in gait.
  • Identify normal movement components and biomechanics of the UE.
  • Identify components of normal gait and lower extremity biomechanics.
  • Relate biomechanical gait components to impairments associated with neurological dysfunction.
  • Synthesise information to develop and implement effective intervention strategies for persons with neurological dysfunction during patient practicum sessions.

Process for application:

The fee for this 5 day course is €550.

The cost includes course reference materials and refreshments for the morning and afternoon breaks. Lunch is not included.
